Washington, D.C.’s most memorable hospitality spaces tell stories that span generations. As neighborhoods evolve, the challenge isn’t simply creating something new, it’s preserving the character that made a place special while reimagining it for today’s guests.

That philosophy is evident at The Grace, located at 1539 7th Street NW in the heart of Shaw. The newest concept from restaurateur Sanjay Mandhaiya, owner of the acclaimed Pappe and Karravaan, transforms the former Passenger space into a sophisticated American gastropub that blends elevated tavern fare, exceptional cocktails, and timeless hospitality. Executive Chef Courtney Evans created a menu that combines refined technique with approachable American classics designed to encourage conversation and connection.

Bringing that vision to life required far more than a renovation. Hospitality Construction partnered with the ownership and design teams to complete a full interior transformation while preserving much of the building’s existing infrastructure. Reusing significant structural elements not only respected the history of the property but also supported a thoughtful, sustainable approach to construction.

Inside, every design decision was carefully considered. Rich walnut finishes, custom velvet wall coverings, layered lighting, and commissioned artwork create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and welcoming. The owners intentionally curated a softer, more feminine aesthetic that contrasts with the traditional American tavern, while preserving the warmth and authenticity that define neighborhood gathering places.

The experience unfolds across two distinct levels. The lively first-floor bar welcomes guests with handcrafted cocktails, fresh oysters, and energetic conversation. Upstairs, an intimate cocktail bar and refined dining room offer a quieter experience, where custom lighting, textured finishes, and thoughtfully designed spaces create privacy and a sense of occasion.

For Hospitality Construction, one of the project’s greatest achievements was the collaborative process itself. As the design evolved throughout construction, the owners, architects, designers, and construction team worked seamlessly together, refining details and solving challenges to ensure every element reflected the original vision. From the dramatic lighting that shapes the mood to the custom architectural features that define each space, craftsmanship and collaboration are evident throughout the restaurant.
