Founded by James Beard Award winning chef Michael Schlow, Alta Strada is described by Schlow as uncomplicated and personal, serving the kinds of dishes he’d happily eat every day.
For his Washington, DC location inside the Canopy by Hilton, Hospitality Construction Services was tasked with an ambitious challenge: complete the full build-out in just two weeks. The catch? All work had to be done between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. due to strict noise restrictions for hotel guests.
One of the most striking results is the entranceway—a sleek, inviting threshold that harmonizes with the hotel’s interior while setting the stage for a modern urban trattoria. The transformation converted a retail storefront into Alta Strada’s first DC trattoria, completely redefining the space for dining, bar service, and hospitality.
The interior pairs rich leather booths with a bright, well-lit bar, accented by a thoughtful mix of colors and textures. In the basement kitchen, new appliances were installed to support the menu’s consistent quality. Concrete floors, structural columns, and open space planning were intentionally preserved to maintain a contemporary yet welcoming feel.
Completed on time, the finished restaurant offers guests a cozy design, thoughtful service, and a menu rooted in simplicity and quality—a perfect reflection of Schlow’s vision.
